HOA Litigation Attorney - Great Work/Life Balance

CyberCoders

Date: 1 week ago
City: Mission Viejo, CA
Salary: $165,000 - $250,000 / yr
Contract type: Full time

We are a well-established California law firm that has guided residential community clients for close to four decades. Our client roster covers hundreds of communities, from small neighborhoods to sprawling planned developments, and we stay deeply involved in the professional organizations that support them. We operate as one team rather than a collection of solo practitioners, we protect evenings and weekends, and we reward effort with a generous bonus structure.

The Opportunity

We are growing our legal team at our South Orange County headquarters and want an attorney who is ready to plant roots and build a career with us. Because our client base is already deep and loyal, you will not be asked to hunt for work. You will be asked to serve existing clients extremely well. If you arrive with experience in this niche, you will hit the ground running. If you come from another litigation or real estate setting, senior attorneys and partners will mentor you step by step until your own practice takes shape.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

Your time will split roughly evenly between advising clients and resolving disputes.

- Advise volunteer boards of directors on governance, compliance, and everyday operating questions, including periodic after-hours board meetings

- Draft and update governing documents, rules, policies, and client letters

- Guide boards through special assessments and confirm that their decisions stay within the law

- Negotiate and review agreements with service providers such as landscaping, roofing, painting, and maintenance companies, and step in when a vendor falls short

- Resolve disagreements between boards and individual owners through mediation and other alternative dispute resolution

- Handle enforcement matters, including litigation and, when it cannot be avoided, trial

- Join one of two practice teams: a transactional team focused on document preparation and advisory work, or an enforcement team focused on contested matters. You can lean toward either side without needing to master both.

- Build relationships with community managers and clients; take clients to lunch if you wish, and earn a commission on new clients you refer

- Take part in industry education, speaking, and networking opportunities that the firm arranges for you

Required Skills & Qualifications

- Active membership in good standing with the State Bar of California

- Civil litigation, real estate, or community association law experience; senior attorneys from this niche are especially welcome, but newcomers who are excited to learn will be considered

- Polished written and verbal communication, with comfort advising lay volunteer leaders who are not trained in the law

- A team-first mindset; our work is shared, and we value collaboration over a go-it-alone approach

- Ability to manage a full docket of client matters and meet deadlines

- Comfort with legal technology, time-entry systems, and hybrid work

- Local to, or willing to commute to, South Orange County

Why You Will Love It Here

- Base pay starting at $165,000, with room above that for outstanding experience

- A monthly hours-based bonus that pays up to $3,000 per month, a lower hours target than most law firms, and a commission on clients you bring in

- A predictable 37.5-hour week, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with the office closed every day from noon to 1:00 PM

- Hybrid schedule: three days on-site each week, with two work-from-home days earned after your first 90 days

- An existing client base, so you do the work rather than chase it

- Mentoring from senior attorneys, the senior partner, and the managing partner

- Generous benefits: 401(k) and Roth 401(k) with company match; medical, dental, and vision insurance; HSA and FSA; health and wellness program; life insurance; employee assistance program; paid time off; parental leave; professional development assistance; tuition reimbursement; employee recognition programs; referral bonus program

- Retreats, summits, sports and entertainment outings, team contests, and celebrations of life events throughout the year
