Position: Varsity Tennis Head Coach

Location: Newton Country Day School, Newton, MA

Schedule: Spring 2027 (March through mid-May). Practices are held Monday through Friday afternoons.

Stipend: $7,000-$9,000, commensurate with experience

Position Summary

Newton Country Day School seeks a knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and encouraging

Head Varsity Tennis Coach to lead the tennis program. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical knowledge, effective leadership skills, and a commitment to fostering a values-based, inclusive team culture. The coach will be responsible for developing players of varying experience levels, organizing practices and match play, and guiding the team through competitive league play in alignment with the Sacred Heart mission and the school’s athletic philosophy.

Position Responsibilities

Coaching & Program Leadership

• Lead all aspects of varsity tennis practices, matches, and postseason competition.
• Provide instruction in tennis fundamentals, stroke development, strategy, and match play.
• Develop players of varying experience and ability levels through individualized instruction and purposeful practice.
• Foster a supportive team environment that encourages sportsmanship, growth, confidence, and competitive excellence.
• Establish lineups and doubles pairings based on player development, team needs, and competitive considerations.
• Provide mentorship to sub-Varsity coaches to streamline the program as a whole.

Team Development & Collaboration

• Build a positive team culture that reflects Newton Country Day School’s values of courage, confidence, and belonging.
• Work collaboratively with the Athletics Department and school leadership to align athletic and academic priorities.
• Communicate effectively with student-athletes, families, and school personnel regarding scheduling, expectations, team goals, and player development.

Operations & Program Support

• Coordinate practice plans and equipment needs in collaboration with the Athletics Department.
• Maintain accurate team rosters, lineups, and match results as needed.
• Uphold school and athletic department policies, safety standards, and expectations for student-athlete conduct.
• Be willing and eligible to drive a school minibus to practices and matches as needed.

Qualifications

• Prior coaching or competitive playing experience in tennis required; head coaching experience preferred.
• Strong knowledge of tennis technique, strategy, rules, and match play.
• Demonstrated ability to develop players and build a positive, competitive team culture.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
