The Lawyers’ Committee for Rhode Island Staff Attorney Position
The Lawyers' Committee for Rhode Island (LCRI) is a nonprofit establishing as a
public interest law firm conducting strategic federal litigation to protect individuals
and organizations from unlawful federal action, safeguard civil rights, and protect
immigrant communities in Rhode Island. We are hiring a Staff Attorney to carry a
substantial federal court docket alongside our Counsel and a growing roster of pro
bono volunteers, working closely with advocacy groups, nonprofits, and communities
as part of LCRI’s mission to protect and advance democracy.
This is a role for a lawyer who wants to take ownership of cases that contribute to a
more just and equitable society, and build a substantive litigation portfolio in the
public interest.
What You Will Do
• Draft pleadings, dispositive motions, and appellate briefs in federal civil rights,
Administrative Procedure Act, immigration, and constitutional matters
• Develop case theory, legal strategy, and record development in coordination with
LCRI's Counsel and co-counsel at partner organizations
• Advise nonprofit clients — boards, executives, and staff — on legal risks to their
missions, federal grant terminations, and regulatory exposure
• Supervise and collaborate with pro bono attorneys and law students working on
LCRI matters
• Contribute to LCRI's community legal education and access-to-justice
programming as interests and capacity allow
Who We're Looking For
We are looking for attorneys who are ready to begin a high-ownership public interest
role, including practicing attorneys with a strong interest in civil rights work, and
candidates completing a federal clerkship, a public interest fellowship, or a
comparable early-career position.
Required
• J.D. and admission to at least one U.S. state bar
• Excellent federal litigation, legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills
• Demonstrated commitment to public interest work
• Comfort managing a substantial caseload with significant independence
• The ability to collaborate with community groups and partners to support their
missions and access to justice
Strongly preferred
• Rhode Island bar admission, or willingness to promptly obtain admission to the
Rhode Island bar
• Meaningful connection to Rhode Island — residence, family, education, or
sustained professional ties — sufficient to support long-term engagement with
the local legal community
• Experience with APA administrative challenges, immigration litigation, or federal
civil rights practice
• Spanish fluency or proficiency in another language widely spoken in Rhode
Island's immigrant communities (including Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Khmer,
or Cape Verdean Creole)
Compensation and Benefits
Salary is competitive with peer public interest law firms and commensurate with
experience. LCRI supports remote and hybrid work arrangements; the specific
expectation for this role will be discussed during the interview process.
