Position Summary
Winston-Salem State University is accepting applications for the Graduate Hall Advisor position for the 2026-2027 academic school year.
Under the supervision of a Residence Education Coordinator, the Graduate Hall Advisor (GHA) coordinates and implements a comprehensive program for 250-400 residents in one or two residence halls that will enhance their academic, career, social, and interpersonal success. Some specific duties include supervising, training, and motivating a staff of 5-11 Resident Advisors, assessing resident needs, and daily facility management. The Graduate Hall Advisor will also assists the Residence Education Coordinator in the implementation of administrative responsibilities for the unit(s), including but not limited to conduct, roommate mediations, care report follow-up, on-call duty rotation, and managing the daily hall operations in the Residence Education Coordinator absence.
Administration and Leadership 40%
- Maintain weekly scheduled office hours during hours of operation Monday- Friday
- Prepare correspondences, reports, and maintain appropriate records
- Respond to inquiries, phone calls and emails in a timely manner
- Provide administrative support to direct supervisor for day-to-day hall operation
- Attend weekly residence education team meetings
- Meet weekly with Resident Advisors and direct supervisor
- Serve on Departmental Committees
- Respond to incidents and concern quickly and efficiently
Department Responsibilities 20%
- Attend weekly residence education team meetings
- Assist with department assessment initiatives
- Participate in departmental meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities
- Assist with the opening and closing of residence halls
- Work to prevent crisis and respond appropriately to crisis situations as they arise
- Assist with the recruitment, selection of Resident Advisors, Desk Attendants.
- Assist with training and development of student staff.
- Serve on the professional staff on call rotation for crisis management
Community Development and Facility Management 40%
- Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for residents and student staff
- Assist RAs with programming needs for residents
- Perform building rounds to build community and address facility concerns
- Report and follow up on housekeeping and maintenance concerns Address behavioral concerns with residents and create plan of action to correct concerns
- Co-Advise Hall Council with Residence Education Coordinator
- Mentor residents and staff in areas that assist with their development
- Assist with the management of student concerns, roommate mediations, and educational conduct conversations
Terms for Employment
- This appointment is for one academic year with the option to return for an additional year based on performance
- 10-month contract with the start date of July 17th, 2026, to May 18th, 2027

Minimum Experience/Education
- Earned bachelor’s degree and currently enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program.
- The Graduate Hall Advisor must remain in good academic standing with the Graduate School throughout the term of employment.
- The Graduate Hall Advisor must be available for the stipulated contract period as outlined in her/his appointment letter. These dates include the July, August, and January training periods, opening and closing of the residence halls, and applicable on-duty periods.
- Nonacademic outside employment is not permitted.
Required skills include:
- Demonstrated ability to lead peers in the development, planning, and implementation of student-led programs, activities, and services.
- Demonstrated experience with the use of technology, to include social media and Microsoft office.
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills and the ability to listen and problem solve.
