Brief Description
The Cancer Registrar Associate is an entry-level position supporting the oncology data registry through case finding and follow-up activities under the direct supervision of a Certified Oncology Data Specialist (ODS/CTR). This role is designed as a developmental pathway toward full certification. Upon successful completion of required training and attainment of the ODS/CTR credential, the incumbent may be eligible for advancement to the Certified Cancer Registrar position.
Specific Job Duties And Responsibilities
- Compiles, analyzes, abstracts, and codes medical data from patient records in the EMR using STORE, SEER, ICD-O, and AJCC manuals.
- Reviews patient charts to obtain follow-up data and ensure timely, accurate disease status information.
- Sends and tracks follow-up communications to physicians and patients.
- Enters follow-up data into the registry system, maintaining accurate, up-to-date patient records.
- Assists in maintaining and troubleshooting registry systems for compliance and functionality.
- Participates in training to develop skills in anatomy, coding standards, and cancer registry practices.
- Attends continuing education opportunities to stay current in oncology data management.
OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS: Travel to CARTI Cancer Center and Clinic locations outside of Little Rock as required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: N/A
Education, Certification, Licensure, Registration
- Associate’s degree or completion of at least 60 college-level credits (any field) from an accredited institution.
- Successful completion (grade C or better) of at least two semesters (6 total credit hours) in Human Anatomy and Human Physiology.
- Must meet all education/coursework requirements to be eligible to sit for the ODS certification exam upon completion of required practicum or work experience.
- Official transcripts required to verify eligibility.
Skills
EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
- 1 year of medical records or related experience, preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, basic anatomy, and oncology preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and familiarity with EMR systems preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage time and prioritize tasks effectively.
Reasoning Ability
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.
Interpersonal Skills
- Must interact and communicate both verbally and in written form.
- Must interact and exchange information regarding patients with physicians and other departmental personnel, and outside agencies on a frequent basis while respecting the confidentiality of patient information.
