One of the first urban conservation corps in the country, the San Jose Conservation Corps + Charter School was founded in 1987 to empower young adults aged 18 to 27 ("Corpsmembers") to upskill themselves and advance their career in conservation and green spaces. Today, SJCC+CS continues to operate its 1-year-long paid workforce development program, while also functioning as a WASC-accredited charter high school, allowing those who have aged out of the traditional education system to earn their high school diploma.

Department Information

Zero Waste Silicon Valley is a program SJCC+CS that strives to tackle two of California’s most significant challenges at once: systemic barriers to employment for transition-age youth and the annual disposal of 30 million tons of waste. We provide technical training in skills like driving a forklift, processing E-waste, and interpersonal skills such as conflict management, communication, and effective teamwork. Operational projects include landfill waste diversion, public education and outreach, and more.

Position Summary

The Zero Waste Supervisor I plays an important operations role for SJCC+CS' Zero Waste program. This position is responsible for mentoring and overseeing the work of a crew of Corpsmembers to ensure that our projects and special events work plan goals are executed. The Zero Waste Supervisor also works to develop effective relationships with shareholders in the Zero Waste industry, and plays a lead role in engaging and educating members of the public.

Key Responsibilities

• Coordinate administrative operations, communications, attendance tracking, reporting, and project documentation.
• Track waste collection data, project deliverables, and diversion metrics for routes and events.
• Support residential and commercial outreach activities, waste collection routes, and weekend recycling events.
• Maintain warehouse organization and coordinate material pickups with hauling partners.
• Supervise, train, mentor, and support corpsmembers in daily project work and professional development.
• Foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive team environment while enforcing organizational policies and standards.
• Conduct vehicle inspections, facilitate safety meetings, maintain safety records, and ensure proper use of PPE.
• Monitor compliance with safety procedures, report incidents, and communicate workplace injuries and hazards to management.
• Secure facilities and perform other duties as assigned.

• Salary: Placement on the compensation scale is determined using a number of factors, including the candidate’s level of experience and education that either meets or significantly exceeds the minimum requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school Diploma or GED
• 1 year of supervisory experience leading young adults OR equivalent experience that demonstrates the ability to work in team-oriented settings and lead others.
• 1 year of work experience in any of the following areas: waste materials recovery, edible food recovery, zero waste community outreach, composting, or similar.
• 1 year of professional experience driving with passengers.
• The ability to solve problems in the field with minimal assistance.
• Strong commitment to improving the quality of life for urban youth.
• The ability to use, and teach others to use, power and hand tools safely.
• Knowledge of safe work practices.
• First aid/CPR certification.
• The ability to maintain detailed records and documentation.
• Customer Service Experience - able to identify and resolve customer concerns.
• Computer literate.

Driving Record and Requirements: This position requires driving one or more company vehicles. After an offer is made, the candidate must submit a copy of their DMV driver’s record, and maintain a record satisfactory to the organization's auto insurance carrier. The incumbent must possess and continue to maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license and a clean driving record.

Medical Verification and Screening: State law requires all employees working with youth to provide medical verification of negative tuberculosis test results within the last year. Employees will also be required to undergo a driver medical exam, drug screen, and submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination prior to starting work.

Background Check and Fingerprinting: If the position is offered and accepted, candidates will be required to undergo Live Scan Fingerprinting as well as a background check, which includes a state and federal criminal history record check.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bilingual English and Spanish
• Degree from an accredited 2 or 4-year college in Environmental Science, Biology, Education, or similar field
• Possession of any of the following certifications: OSHA 30, CPR Instructor, TRUE Advisor, SWANA, Master Composter, OSHA Train the Trainer, Forklift Trainer, or similar
• Experience driving with flatbeds and trailers

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $29.50 - $32.64 per hour
