Miami Country Day School was founded in 1938 as a residential proprietary boarding school for boys through eighth grade and has evolved remarkably over the past 88 years. The School has become a coeducational, nonprofit, interdenominational school with approximately 1400 students in Pre-Kindergarten3 through grade 12 representing approximately 44 countries. The school emphasizes the education of the whole person through the core values of honor, respect, wisdom, purpose and compassion.

JOB SUMMARY

In the absence of the regular classroom teacher, the Substitute Teacher helps students to learn subject matter and/or skills that are required for scheduled lessons and provides meaningful instruction for assigned classrooms.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & TASKS

  • Reports to division office at beginning of school day (7:45) to pick up required materials/schedule of classes and at the end of the school day to return materials. Follows sign out procedures as prescribed by the Division personnel.
  • Carries out a program of study prescribed in the lesson plans left by the classroom teacher.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in the lesson plans for the lessons, units, or projects assigned.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly classroom. Straightens chairs, tables, etc.
  • Takes attendance in accordance with school procedures.
  • Insures that the students are never left unattended in the classroom.
  • May perform duties usually required of absent teacher such as lunch duty, recess duty, etc.
  • Knows emergency evacuation routes for the classrooms assigned.
  • Knows procedures for referring students who are disciplinary problems.
  • Knows school procedures and regulations. • Performs other related duties as directed by Division personnel.
  • Adheres to established Miami Country Day School policies described in the MCDS Employee Handbook.

SCHEDULE

School hours are Monday–Friday, 7:45 AM–3:20 PM

PAY RATE

  • Half Day: $75
  • Full Day: $135

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Bachelors Degree or experience and skill in specific, relevant field of study that applies to the classroom.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; professional manner with all school personnel and students.
  • Demonstrate functional knowledge of computers and all aspects of the Microsoft Office Professional software programs.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines and accomplish specific tasks as requested.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignment.
  • Ability to maintain order and discipline in a classroom.
  • Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students.
  • Ability to respond at a moment’s notice in an emergency following school procedures in order to protect the safety of students
  • Physical ability (able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally) and dexterity to perform the duties and responsibilities of the objectives in the lesson.
  • Duties require extended periods of time standing, walking, sitting, talking and hearing.
  • Work environment may be in temperature-controlled room and outside in extreme heat and/or cold.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the needs of diverse constituencies within the school community and the skills and attitude to deliver an exemplary experience equitably to all students.
  • Work in a fast-paced, stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work.
  • May work long hours for extended periods of time.
  • Be able to 30 pounds.
  • Work in varied and changing weather conditions, including extreme heat.
