About Our District

The Madison Metropolitan School District is the second largest school district in Wisconsin. The district serves a beautifully diverse population of more than 25,000 students. More than half are students of color. Almost half come from low income households. Nearly one third are English Language Learners, and more than 100 languages are represented in our schools. Purpose of Position

Under general supervision of the Electrical Technology Manager, this position is responsible for electrical, data (LAN/WAN), telecommunications, CCTV, door access control, fire alarm, master clock, public address system work associated with the maintenance, repair and remodeling work for all Madison Metropolitan School District facilities. The position requires varied working hours and availability on an emergency basis.

This position will have a high degree of integrity, sustain a culture of continuous improvement, and be committed to creating and maintaining an inclusive work environment while having a growth mindset to a multi-faceted operation while having a focus on creating a positive work culture.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Electrical Maintenance, Repair and Installation 85%

    • Complete electrical work associated with maintenance and repair activities.

    • Install new electrical work associated with remodeling work.

    • Visit each building frequently to test electrical equipment and complete maintenance operations.

    • Research new products, procedures, services, and equipment.

    • Troubleshoot building electrical system problems and determine recommendations and cost estimates for solutions.

    • Obtain required electrical building permits.

    • Estimate and procure materials for maintenance and installation projects.

    • Install clocks, public address, control, data, telephone, communication, CCTV, door access control and fire alarm wiring.

  • Administrative Work 10%

    • Maintain preventive maintenance logs and charts for electrical equipment in cooperation with building custodians.

    • Maintain records of materials and labor associated with assigned work.

    • Review, assess, prioritize and complete work orders based on urgency, operational impact, resource availability, and organizational priorities to ensure timely and efficient completion

  • Other Duties as Assigned 5%

    • Perform other duties as assigned by executive leadership or their representatives or designees.

    • Attend district and school functions that support MMSD’s strategic framework, initiatives, and core values.

    • Complete any and all district required training.

    • Build collaborative relationships with business partners.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local codes, regulations, and ordinances relating to construction activities and specifically with electrical work

  • Considerable knowledge and ability with electrical layout and estimating procedures

  • Knowledge of and ability in electrical rough-in work and ability in electrical wiring

  • Knowledge of and ability in working with construction plans, shop drawings, and material specifications

  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with co-workers, contractors, technical consultants, students and the public

  • Knowledge and skill in troubleshooting electrical in service work for motors, panels, lights, etc.

  • Skill in the use of all tools common to the electrical trade.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish relationships at all levels of the organization.

  • Follow principles and practices that promote and advance anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion

Required Qualifications

  • Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work toward one’s own cultural competence (i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one’s skills and expertise, and having the desire to learn in these areas)

License or Certification Requirements

  • Journeyman Electrician License

  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license

Physical Requirements

Ability to work under generally safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors is minimal and poses little to no risk of injury. This position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally and may involve walking, sitting, stooping or reaching. Manual dexterity is necessary for completing general tasks while operating office equipment. This position may require being stationary for extended periods of time.

Ability to perform work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments throughout the year, including in inclement weather, spaces without air conditioning, and areas where temperatures may be uncomfortable or fluctuate rapidly.

Working Conditions

  • May involve exposure to asbestos and lead based surfaces.

  • Work may require travel to different locations within the district and to off-site meetings.

  • Position may require working evenings, nights, and some weekends.
