Role Description

The Senior Carrier Sales Representative is a full-time, on-site role based in Grand Rapids, MI. This role is responsible for building and managing strong relationships with carrier partners, negotiating rates, and securing capacity to support customer freight across North America. Day-to-day responsibilities include prospecting and onboarding new carriers, monitoring shipment performance, and resolving service issues in real time. The individual in this role will collaborate closely with operations and customer sales teams to match freight with the right carriers, ensure margin goals are met, and maintain high service standards. The position also involves analyzing market trends, optimizing carrier networks, and using Surus’ technology platforms to improve efficiency, visibility, and decision-making in carrier management.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Carrier Sourcing & Development: Prospect, vet, and onboard new motor carriers to expand network capacity while building strategic, long-term carrier partnerships.
  • Negotiation & Pricing: Negotiate competitive carrier rates and transportation agreements based on market conditions, lane history, service expectations, and cost-effectiveness in coordination with Compliance and Operations.
  • Capacity Planning: Collaborate with Sales, Account Management, and Operations to align carrier capacity with customer freight requirements while maximizing service and profitability.
  • Load Execution & Tracking: Cover, dispatch, monitor, and track shipments from pickup through final delivery, maintaining accurate, real-time information within the Transportation Management System (TMS) and proactively communicating updates to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Carrier Compliance & Vetting: Perform comprehensive carrier qualification and ongoing re-vetting, including fraud prevention, insurance verification, safety performance review, inspection history, and monitoring for double-brokering and chameleon carrier risks.
  • Relationship Management: Build, strengthen, and maintain long-term carrier partnerships that deliver reliable capacity, exceptional service, and mutually beneficial growth.
  • Mentorship: Support and mentor Carrier Sales Representatives by sharing negotiation strategies, compliance knowledge, market intelligence, and carrier relationship best practices.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Sales, Account Management, Operations, and Compliance to ensure seamless communication, effective handoffs, and successful customer execution.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in freight brokerage, dispatching, or carrier sales, with a track record of building and managing a carrier network.
  • Proven skills in relationship building, negotiation, and account management, with the ability to develop long-term partnerships with carriers.
  • Ability to use logistics and transportation management systems, as well as common business software tools, to track shipments, analyze data, and manage capacity.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making abilities, particularly in resolving service disruptions and balancing service quality with margin objectives.
  • Prior experience in a third-party logistics or brokerage environment is highly beneficial; knowledge with truckload, less-than-truckload, dedicated capacity, high value cargo and hazmat is a plus.
  • Ability to work on-site in Grand Rapids, MI, with a high level of professionalism and reliability
  • Ability to thrive in a high-volume, fast-paced, high-accountability environment, with strong prioritization, multi-tasking, and attention to detail.
