Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) — a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York — seeks a highly-driven, multi-talented Manager, Communications to build awareness and support for HCZ through compelling storytelling that centers our impact and the people we serve.
The Manager, Communications will join our Communications Team at the forefront of innovation at HCZ. The successful candidate will be a skilled communicator, writer, and editor with experience creating and implementing multi-channel communications strategies encompassing owned and earned media, crafting written content to engage diverse audiences, and managing an array of communications platforms and projects.
The individual will join HCZ during a critical phase, as we work to scale our impact and put one million children across the country on the pathway to social and economic mobility.

What you’ll do
Reporting to the Associate Director, Communications, the Manager, Communications will help create and implement communications strategies to advance key priorities: awareness, scholar enrollment, talent recruitment, staff culture, leadership visibility, thought leadership, and philanthropy. Working in collaboration with members of the Communications Department, and stakeholders across the organization, they will do this primarily through the creation of written storytelling highlighting our local Harlem-based programs; management of our staff intranet and newsletter; support of our earned media efforts; development and refinement of our core messaging; copywriting; and editing. Some travel is required.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Help develop and implement editorial strategies and innovations to advance our key priorities, particularly elevating the brand profile of our local, Harlem-based programming and fostering staff culture
- Create and/or edit written content highlighting the work of HCZ and our scholars, families, community members, and staff members; this includes: website content, newsletters, emails, advertising copy, and social media captions
- Manage our “In The Zone” staff communications platforms, e.g., intranet (Jostle) and staff newsletter (Mailchimp) to inform and inspire staff members, including: creating a content calendar and ensuring alignment with org-wide priorities, sourcing content, and analyzing and reporting on performance data to optimize engagement
- Develop and implement an approach to gather, report, and offer recommendations on staff feedback, including leveraging the intranet, staff newsletter, and survey platforms
- Create and/or edit written content for high-level, executive deliverables, including reports, recaps, and presentations, including our biennial Impact Report
- Help develop and refine core organizational messaging for our work, impact, and programs
- Edit and ensure internal stakeholder-written communications meet standards for quality and messaging alignment
Minimum Job Requirements
- At least 5-6 years’ experience working in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, brand management, or related fields
- Ability to juggle multiple projects and priorities at once
- Commitment to HCZ values and mission
- Strong written and verbal communication and editing skills
- Experience with Mailchimp or other email marketing platform required
- Experience with intranet platforms strongly preferred
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent strongly preferred
