Webster Vicknair MacLeod is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented legal professional to join our team as a Legal Brief Writer specializing in personal injury. The ideal candidate will excel in all aspects of legal writing, including drafting motions, responses, and appeals.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Research, prepare, and draft motions and responses for the assigned trial team
• Learn and apply procedural and substantive law across Texas state and federal courts
• Conduct legal research and review case files and documents
• Draft briefs and memoranda on contested issues throughout litigation and trial
• Draft demand letters
• Draft dispositive and other pretrial motions
• Draft petitions and pleadings
• Support trial teams as needed, including occasional travel for trial prep
• Take cases the distance — from trial court all the way to the appellate bench
Requirements
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively, manage competing deadlines, and deliver polished work product with minimal supervision
• Strong organizational skills — able to juggle multiple active matters under tight, shifting timelines
• Excellent research, analytical, and writing skills, with the ability to get up to speed quickly on complex or unfamiliar issues
• Flexibility to work outside standard hours around briefing schedules and caseload demands
• A genuine interest in advocating for injured clients and pursuing strong outcomes on their behalf
Qualifications
• J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
• Member in good standing of any state bar
• At least two years of post-law-school experience at a civil litigation firm, or one year in a judicial clerkship
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Comfortable working with standard legal technology (Word, Outlook, Excel; case management and document platforms a plus)
• Full-time position; remote or based in our Houston office; occasional travel required
Experience
• Plaintiff personal injury experience preferred
• Civil litigation background
• Regular client communication experience
• Familiarity with Texas state and federal court procedure
• Strong brief, motion, and research writing background
• Appellate experience a plus
Education/Certification
• J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
• Valid driver's license and auto insurance
