Research Scientist II
Tulane University
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, this role will provide technical expertise for the research mission of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. The incumbent performs advanced genomics, transcriptomics, and gene-editing technologies to elucidate the complex molecular regulation of mycotoxin biosynthesis and virulence by mycotoxigenic fungi. The goal of the research is to enhance biocontrol strains and crop resistance to aflatoxin-producing fungi by identifying key Aspergillus flavus genes required for invasion and toxin production that can be targeted in host resistance-based control strategies. In particular, the focus will be on “killer toxin-like genes.” This position cooperates closely with faculty, collaborators and students to address important research initiatives that focus on mitigating mycotoxigenic fungi. Responsibilities include designing and executing genetic manipulation experiments in important fungi that impact agriculture and human health, communicating with collaborators about shared research goals, writing manuscripts for publication, and maintaining compliance with university policies and applicable safety and regulatory standards, including chemical hygiene, biosafety, and environmental health requirements. The Research Scientist may also provide training, mentoring, and technical guidance to students, staff, and laboratory users in proper techniques, equipment use, and safe work practices, while contributing to departmental initiatives that support shared facilities, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the integration of teaching and research. The position requires a high degree of independence, problem-solving ability, and adaptability to support evolving research needs in the field of fungal molecular biology.
