Position Description
This is a full-time position that is responsible for overseeing and assisting with the timely and accurate filing of federal, state and local tax returns for various companies owned by the family and individuals to comply with the requirements of the various taxing authorities. This position deals with complex tax issues for a family business that operates across a diverse range of industries, including oil and gas, ranching, trucking and banking. Handles sensitive data and maintains confidentiality of sensitive information at all times.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the preparation of federal, state and local income tax returns for various family companies and individual owners, including partnerships, LLC's, C-corporations, S-corporations, trusts, estates and private foundations using computer software programs.
- Review tax returns prepared by the tax accountants; tax staff members; read and interpret relevant guidance or instructions for such returns.
- Maintain backup tax calendar to keep track of all filing requirements such as tax returns, estimated tax payments and required elections and ensure all requirements are met timely.
- Prepare correspondence with IRS and various state tax commissions concerning filing issues or tax notices.
- Gather and prepare documents for IRS audits and state tax audits, as assigned.
- Work with Accounting and Treasury Department personnel to get information for estimated tax payments, cash flow projections and income tax returns due at various times throughout the year.
- For company tax returns, review books prepared by the Accounting Department and work with them to get information for tax returns for federal and state filings. Prepare adjusting journal entries, if necessary, to give to the accounting department personnel.
- For individual tax returns, contact family members to obtain their personal income and gift tax information and work with Treasury Department personnel to obtain individuals' books and records. Prepare adjusting journal entries for the Treasury Department personnel to post to the individuals’ books. Prepare tax returns and estimated payments during the year.
- Assist with the processing of tax returns and estimated payments as assigned.
- Research complex technical tax issues, compliance issues or concerns from accounting staff and new tax law changes that may affect our companies.
- Keep current on tax law changes by reading daily tax updates and professional publications, and attending required continuing education classes to keep CPA license current.
- Lead the mentoring and development training efforts for our Tax Accountants.
- Explore ideas to improve current tax accounting and reporting processes.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- The Tax Manager role will supervise a team of tax accountants, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in tax filings and adherence to all federal, state, and local regulations.
Qualifications
- For the Tax Manager, a bachelor's degree or higher in accounting with six or more (6+) years of tax accounting experience and for the Senior Tax Accountant (4+) years or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
- Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience for the Tax Manager role.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) License.
- Extensive experience preparing complex tax returns.
- Strong knowledge of tax compliance concepts as well as tax and accounting principles and procedures.
- Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills; effective time management to meet all deadlines.
- Sound analytical skills, attention to detail, thorough, objective and quality focused.
- Ability to work in team-oriented environment while demonstrating strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to establish positive working relationships throughout the organization.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision; self-motivated, professional demeanor, dependable and punctual.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Preferred Education, Experience and/or Abilities
- Knowledge of Pro Systems Tax Software.
Computer Skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
- Ability to use calculators, printers, copiers, and fax machines.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
- English language fluency,verbal and written.
- Acceptable results of a pre-employment background check, credit check, and drug/alcohol test.
- Must reside in Casper, Wyoming.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:30pm, with Wednesday being remote. While this position infrequently requires extended hours or weekend work, extended hours may be required to meet time-sensitive deadlines.
Travel
This may require infrequent travel. Travel is typically within the United States.
