Join the NACASA Team as a Forensic Nurse Examiner specializing in Sexual Assault Nurse Exams (SANE-A) and Domestic/Intimate Partner Violence Strangulation Exams for adults and adolescents. In this vital role, you will provide expert forensic nursing care to victims of sexual assault and DV/IPV strangulation, ensuring compassionate support while meticulously collecting evidence to aid criminal investigations. Your expertise will help bring justice and healing to survivors, making a meaningful difference in their lives. This position offers an exciting opportunity to combine clinical excellence with forensic investigation, working within a multidisciplinary team committed to trauma-informed care and justice. This is a contracted position for a minimum of 48 hours of call time per month, utilized on an “as needed” basis with a maximum shift length of 12 hours. Scheduling priority for this position is for “B” shift, requiring flexible self-scheduling to include weekends, evenings, and nights.
Duties
- Perform comprehensive medical forensic examinations on victims of sexual assault and DV/IPV strangulation, including detailed documentation and evidence collection, in accordance with Arizona Criminal Code Section 13-1414 and SAFE/SANE procedure outlined in Department of Justice Protocols.
- Collect, preserve, and document physical evidence such as biological samples, photographs, and clothing in compliance with chain-of-custody protocols.
- Provide compassionate emotional support and crisis intervention to survivors throughout the examination process.
- Educate victims about the examination process, forensic evidence collection, and available resources for support and advocacy.
- Collaborate with Victim Witness Services advocates to facilitate proper follow-up care and safety.
- Work closely with law enforcement and legal teams in preparation for and during the prosecution of a case.
- Maintain meticulous records of examinations, findings, and evidence in secure systems while adhering to confidentiality protocols.
- Participate in Peer Chart Review quality improvement process to ensure clinical accuracy and objective reporting.
- Stay current with evolving forensic nursing practices, legal requirements, and trauma-informed care techniques by completing Continuing Education Units pertaining to sexual assault or DV/IPV Strangulation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) - Preferred
- Associate's Degree or Diploma in Nursing - Required
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license - Required
- 2 years experience in Emergency Department, Critical Care, Labor and Delivery, Medical Surgical Nursing, or equivalent acute care experience – Required
- Unencumbered Active Arizona RN license - Required
- Basic Life Support Certification Upon Hire – Required
- Current certification as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner - Advanced (SANE-A) from the International Association of Forensic Nurses or equivalent credential - Preferred
- Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner-Adult/Adolescent Didactic Training Completed Upon Hire – Required
- Completed approved skills lab adult/adolescent - Required
- Ability to work with survivors of sexual violence and participate in a 24/7 program - Required
- Must pass background check, drug screening, have a valid driver’s license and maintain access to reliable transportation.
- Demonstrated understanding of confidentiality requirements and ethical considerations related to forensic nursing practice.
- Must be able to respond on site in Flagstaff, Arizona within 1 hour while on call
- Preferred experience includes familiarity with trauma response protocols, crisis intervention skills, and knowledge of relevant state or federal laws governing sexual assault cases.
